Press Release

Ontario Provincial Government Introduces a Plan to Improve London Transit.

The provincial government allocates $150 million to the city of London for improving London Public Transit and a Pilot Project for construction of 20 heated and air-conditioned bus stops.

London, January 18, 2020. Ontario Transportation Minister Caroline Mulroney announced on Sunday a $150 million funding for an improved London Transit. The project will fall under the Southwestern Ontario Transport plan, for which a 22-page draft was unveiled by the Transportation Minister. The minister along with Mayor Ed Holder and area cabinet minister Jeff Yurek was present to make the announcement. The project is dedicated to improve and strengthen the widely-used public-transit network in London.

Transportation Minister Caroline Mulroney said “Southwestern Ontario matters. Encouraging economic growth, supporting the creation of good, well-paying jobs and building strong connections between communities in Southwestern Ontario matters.”

The main focus of this plan is to make all parts of London easily accessible to the general public. The key sectors this plan is going to focus on are as follows:

1. Starting express bus routes 95 and 96 from Fanshawe College to Western University and Argyle mall to Hyde Park mall, respectively.

2. Increasing the frequency of buses on bus routes 4, 17, 10, 93, 91, and 94.

3. Starting bus routes 41, 42 and 43 connecting Industrial Area to White Oaks Mall, Natural Science, and Fanshawe College, respectively.

4. A pilot project for the construction of 20 heated and air-conditioned bus stops across London.

5. Connecting southwestern ends (TBD) of London with Fanshawe College and Western University in order to promote affordable housing.

“This is yet to play out, but I am encouraged. It was never planned to be happening overnight. It has been a process, but it has been a very positive one,” said the mayor of London, Ed Holder.

The Project is aimed to create at least 300 jobs, cut travel-time for the public by 15%, and increase connectivity within London by 25% in one year. Learn more about the project and download the draft plan now.
